I have tried this and it's worked SO great for me!! When I was in acupuncture school, I asked one of my teachers what I should try for allergies. I told her, "I don't want to spend alot of time, money or effort on this. What do I do?" And she gave me this simple suggestion. I have been allergy-free for 12 years now and I used to be the sort of person who carried around boxes of tissues in the summertime.
Probiotics are natural bacterium that counter yeast and other organisms that will imbalance the digestive tract with antibiotic use and poor diet, stress, lack of roughage, etc. They're live organisms thought to be healthy for the host organism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probiotic
We need a healthy digestive tract to build up our immunity. In Chinese Medicine, the lungs and the large intestine are paired yin and yang organs, respectively. If one is compromised (many allergens go into the lungs immediately through the nose and mouth) than the other is affected, as well. When we balance the colon, the lungs get stronger, too. In this way, balance of yin and yang can be achieved.
This recommendation has been used with success for allergies to pollen, mold/mildew, cats/dogs/horses, grass, wool, dust mites, mild food allergies (wheat/dairy). These same suggested dosages are also safe for children. I've even recommended it to people for their pet's skin allergies and they've gotten great results!! It costs approximately $25/month for three months.
Here are the directions:
1. GET A BROAD-SPECTRUM PROBIOTIC IN CAPSULE FORM so that it contains a wide-range of probiotic organisms and has a good chance of being released lower into your digestive tract (rather than in your stomach). I recommend this one that's found locally at both Lassen's and Lazy Acres (if they don't have this particular type/brand where you're shopping, just ask for a "broad-spectrum probiotic").
2. MUST BE REFRIGERATED: this means that when you purchased it, it was in the refrigerated section of the health food store AND that you keep it refrigerated at home (I recommend one for your office refrigerator as well, just in case you forget to take it at home).
3. MAKE SURE IT'S "STANDARDIZED" which means that it has a perfectly measured dose so that you only have to take it once-daily. Who wants to take something more than once a day? Not me. I am more apt to take it if it's very simple, especially for three months!!
4. TAKE IT ONCE DAILY: take one capsule 20 minutes before you eat breakfast as your stomach acid is at optimal levels then. If you miss breakfast, take it 20 minutes before lunch. If you miss lunch, take it 20 minutes before dinner. If you miss it with all three meals, just take it before you goto bed.
5. TAKE IT FOR THREE MONTHS AND DON'T STOP, even when you start to feel better. When I initially took this round of probiotics, I missed maybe seven days in three months of taking them. I still got great results but I never stopped until the three months had passed. I started feeling alot better in about a month and half. Don't give up!! I can't even tell you how relieved I am now to not be suffering like I was for MOST of my life. It truly is a miracle.
6. I recommend doing another round of probiotics for two or three weeks about every two years, just to keep your intestinal flora healthy.
Call me or email me if you have any questions and ALWAYS ask your physician before you start taking anything. I may be a primary care provider in CA but it's up to you to balance your healthcare regimen with a western medical perspective.
In good health and with love,
Katie
